Hearing the songs while reading the narrative behind the lyrics, I felt overwhelmed by this tragic story in which humans and artificial intelligence couldn't coexist side by side. Their reciprocal annihilation was inevitable. Except one "sole survivor, in a ship filled with memories. She had become the proof of Earth, proof that life had existed there, a voice for all the species and beauty we once knew". Sludgy post-metal has its greats: Neurosis effectively started the sub-genre, Isis gave us the all-time best effort in Panopticon, Cult of Luna is consistently excellent (if not quite my cup of tea), and Obscure Sphinx is just about the equal of all of the above, albeit way more under-appreciated. Void Mother is among the best albums of the bunch, and certainly the best from Obscure Sphinx. Heavy, hypnotic, and emotionally resonant, this is great - and it gets better with subsequent listens.
